Rowan Williams

The former Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, lectures on ‘Seeing the Light: Epiphany in Visual Art’. Rowan Williams is an outstanding theological writer, scholar and teacher. He has written extensively across a wide range of related fields of professional study – philosophy, theology, spirituality and religious aesthetics, ethical and social topics, and contemporary cultural and interfaith issues. In 1991 he became Bishop of Monmouth, in 1999 the Archbishop of Wales and from 2002–2012, he was the Archbishop of Canterbury. Currently, he is the Master of Magdalene College, University of Cambridge.

In this lecture, Revd Dr Malcolm Guite will explore the way Shakespeare’s account of the poetic imagination might offer some paradigms to help us explore the mystery of the incarnation, and how in turn the idea of incarnation might deepen our understanding of poetry.

This lecture is one of a series of public events as part of the Templeton Religion Trust-funded ‘Art and the Sacred’ project based at the School of Divinity, University of Edinburgh investigating spiritual realities and the extent to which these can be mediated by art.

Malcolm Guite is a poet and priest, and Life Fellow of Girton College, Cambridge. He lectures widely in England and North America on Theology and Literature. His books include Sounding the Seasons; Seventy Sonnets for the Christian Year (Canterbury 2012). The Singing Bowl; Collected Poems (Canterbury 2013) and Parable and Paradox (Canterbury Press 2016) and Mariner: A Voyage with Samuel Taylor Coleridge (Hodder 2017) After Prayer (Canterbury Press 2019) and The Word Within the Words (DLT 2021)

In this talk composer Roxanna Panufnik will discuss the spiritual and religious dimensions of her compositional work with author, and music critic, Jessica Duchen. Central to this discussion is the question of how music – in its creation and in the listening event – can ‘pierce the clouds’ and provide a place of spiritual encounter and discovery.

Contributes to The Sunday Times, the i and BBC Music Magazine. Her libretti include Roxanna Panufnik’s ‘Silver Birch’ – shortlisted for an International Opera Award in 2018. Her latest book is the novel ‘Immortal’, about Beethoven’s ‘immortal beloved’.

Roxanna Panufnik

Has written a wide range of internationally renowned pieces – opera, ballet, choral works, orchestral and chamber compositions and music for film and television. Thanks to her mixed heritage, she has a love of music from a variety of cultures and faiths, whose influence is found throughout her compositions. Roxanna’s works are published by Peter’s Edition Ltd. and recorded on many labels including Signum, Warner Classics, Chandos and EMI Classics.
